Yorkville Kafe, December

I heard such a purr
The espresso man hallelujahing cat joy
Euro disco overstepping the speakers-
Both incriminated.
Quietly I scribble and contend with my deviant mind.
Like ships clanking at the wharf,
Repetitively the espresso man practices his diva struts-n-yelps.
The post college fattie's eyes run away
Over beer gut hills
Until the quiet slopes of his weathered, maroon cap
Are only a faint memory.

Suddenly he snaps back --
Regular consciousness.
When directed to pay,
His irritation forms no mould but a simple grunt;
Pours his glass into a to-go paper,
Sugar in the raw,
And the door reopens
Upon the maelstrom.
